If you have a huge LEGO collection you could be sitting on a goldmine. Actually, you may be sitting on something better than a gold mine if this new study from the Higher School of Economics in RussiaIf this is to be believed, The study suggests that LEGO could be a new frontier in investment, outperforming stocks, bonds, and gold without requiring as much money upfront.

It’s true: LEGO bricks can feel like hot pokers to parents’ feet.

According to the research published in Research in International Business and Finance,Between 1987 and 2015 the value of retired LEGO sets grew by 11% per year, outpacing stocks, bonds, gold, and other investments.

Simply put, LEGO sets work as a commodity. They are printed in limited quantities and are therefore limited in supply. The result is that collectible sets that are produced in a limited quantity will be more difficult to find and will not only have a higher resale value, but they will also continue to hold their value. That said, you don’t want to just go out and buy the first LEGO set you see. First, this is one study out of Russia — not to denigrate the nation, but the study comes from a school ranked No. 568 in the world.

One researcher even noted that “Not all sets are equally successful, and one must be a real LEGO fan to sort out the market nuances and see the investment potential in a particular set.” There’s also the fact that it’s a much better long term investment, meaning more than three years, and while prices may go up to 600% of their original value, they could also drop to 50% of their original value.

There are still patterns that can be positive. According to the study “Prices of thematic sets dedicated to famous buildings, popular movies, or seasonal holidays tend to experience the highest growth on the secondary market (the most expensive ones include Millennium Falcon, Cafe on the Corner, Taj Mahal, Death Star II, and Imperial Star Destroyer). Another attractive category includes sets that were issued in limited editions or distributed at promotional events: rarity increases their value from the collectors’ perspective.”

A set like the Optimus Prime set that can transform is an example of a LEGO set that will increase in value over time. The LEGO succulents could be another set that can increase in value, especially after their print runs are over.

The study also reinforces that LEGO appeals to more than just children and collectors. With so many adult fans of LEGO, it’s likely that folks are willing to spend more than the base value to acquire a LEGO set they wanted as a kid but couldn’t afford. In contrast, some don’t necessarily love LEGO so fervently and might lose rare or collectible sets. These two phenomena can drive secondary LEGO market prices up.

It remains to see if LEGO is a viable investment route. Even so, it’s certainly something to keep an eye on the next time your kid begs you to buy a LEGO set — you might just be investing in their future.
