Why LEGO and Star Wars are a Perfect Pair

LEGO sets are often a faithful representation of real things. The art is in how these bricks, rods pins, and wheels fit together to do something they weren’t intended to do. But when it comes to Star Wars LEGO sets—especially the more massive ones—the vehicles and droids look unusually “native”—as if LEGO itself was conceived with Star Wars in mind. It’s why. The 4784-piece Imperial Star DestroyerIt looks more like a Star Destroyer than a regular Star Destroyer. “LEGO” Star Destroyer.

This is part auspiciousness. The Star Wars universe is very angular with clean lines that lend themselves well to the LEGO aesthetic. And this is also part effort. The designers put a tremendous amount of time into it. “greebling”— the attention to micro surface detail that makes a monochromatic surface look layered, technically functional and interesting.

The LEGO Star Wars sets are, in other words: They are in a different league.
